The Requirement
Communications relays are chosen on three numbers: how high the antenna must go, how much it weighs, and how fast one team can raise it.
The portable tripod-mast systems extend from 2 m to 15 m by adding sections through the crane arm, keep a fixed retracted height of 1110 or 1400 mm, and are installed by one person in 5 to 30 minutes from a single wheeled bag. For shelters and trailers the square-profile masts reach 14 m in motorized or hand-cranked form. Rack cabins protect the radio equipment at the base.
Step 01
Payload
A communications payload is defined by mass, wind area and the cable it needs. Coaxial and waveguide runs are heavy and stiff, and they constrain the mast as much as the antenna does.
Step 02
Mast
Deployment time and crew size usually decide the drive type. Manual masts are lighter and need no power; electromechanical masts raise a heavier payload on their own and can be operated from inside a shelter. One unit in the range lifts five times its own weight in twenty seconds.
Step 03
Base
A mast is only as stable as what it stands on. Vehicle mounting, a tripod base with guy rings, or a fixed foundation each change the wind rating the assembly actually achieves.
What governs the choice
- Extended and retracted height
- Extended height is the mission requirement; retracted height is the transport requirement. Both are published for every mast.
- Payload at height
- Rated payload falls as the mast extends. Read the configuration table at the height you need, not the headline figure.
- Deployment time and crew
- Opening times in the range run from 30 s to 150 s depending on the mechanism and height.
- Power availability
- Where there is no reliable supply, a manual mast removes a failure mode rather than adding convenience.
Where the site sets the limit
- Self-locking and independent braking matter when a mast must stay up through a power interruption.
- Section count drives both folded length and stiffness: more sections fold shorter but deflect more at full extension.
